In the last game before the Christmas break, a new-look Kenilworth team travelled to take on Banbury in the Regional 1 Midlands league, the hosts taking the spoils 39 points to 17.
Kenilworth are battling to field two competitive squads each week, in the face of a seemingly ever-growing injury list. The Kenilworth team to face Banbury included another player making their first fifteen debut for the club, second row Angelo Haworth; congratulations to him on his first cap and an induvial performance to be proud of.
The Kenilworth side will look back on this encounter kicking themselves that they did not play the first half with the same vim and vigor shown in the second. A strong second half performance took the game to the hosts who acknowledged that Kenilworth were unlucky not to come away with anything from the game- especially having been held up over the line with the final play. Kenilworth scored tries through Robinson, Hannam and Hudson, O’Connor bagging one conversion. Notable performances came from our man of the match Chaz Hudson, Will Morgan who looks to be returning to form just at the right time and Fin Gibson who played in two or three positions when needed by the team and proved a thorn in the Banbury side throughout.
Elsewhere on Friday night, Kenilworth Colts were leading Old Leamingtonians when injury forced the game to be abandoned. Also, on Saturday, Kenilworth Women lost out to Novocastrians Ladies 43 points to 5 (this match was played at Kingston Park the home of Newcastle Falcons) and Kenilworth Men 2s came second to Bedworth in an entertaining game, final score 27-21. Notable in this game was club Chairman, Paul Fountaine stepping up and playing 80 minutes, playing alongside his son Sam Fountaine- a nice moment for father and son. Notable performances from new signing Adam Collingwood at scrum half and from the returning Jo Peppitt, both players will surely feature in the first team before the season is out.
