BURTON 76     KENILWORTH 19

28th SEPT 24

Kenilworth, with a number of new young faces, fell to their fourth consecutive defeat, their second consecutive heavy defeat, losing 19-76 at Burton’s new ground and just falling short of their first point of the season.

For the second time in their four games to date Kenilworth took an early lead following an impressive opening ten minutes when they were camped on the Burton line. From a scrum on the right side the ball was taken across the park and a try was finally scored out wide on the opposite flank, courtesy of some good forwards play and finished off by second row Scott Randall. This was converted by Will Morgan. However, Burton came back strongly and were awarded a penalty try to quickly level the scores three minutes later. Three further Burton tries (two converted) followed but Kenilworth came back into the game just before half-time with a fine score, again out wide, from Adam Collingwood, well converted by Will Morgan. This brought the score to 24-14 and gave the travelling support some hope for the second half. However, this hope was short lived as Burton promptly scored their fifth converted try to leave the half time score at 14-31.

The second half started the way the first half had ended with Burton running in a further four tries (two converted) to take a decisive 14-55 lead. Kenilworth decided that a try bonus point was their only option and through everything at it and try number three duly arrived courtesy of Adam Collingwood, once again after some good play from the forwards and backs alike. The try was not converted. This try put some extra sparkle into Kenilworth’s play but in doing so they allowed Burton in for a further three converted tries to finish the game at 19-76.

Kenilworth Man of the Match was Adam Collingwood.

Next weekend (5th Oct) is a welcome week off for Kenilworth. The next game is a home game against Derby who had a surprise win last week over the then league leaders Stourbridge. The game will be played in front of 120 Former Players who have booked in for a pre match lunch.
