Kenilworth 17 Syston 50 - November 16th 2024
A well-attended Services pre-match lunch was followed up with a fine game of rugby between top and bottom of the league on a quite dull weather day. Straight from the off there was a nasty injury to the Syston winger M. McFarlane who dislocated his ankle in a tackle, the medics did a great job in difficult circumstances. The match was delayed whilst he was tended to and we all wish him well in his recovery.
The game itself was open and exciting. Both teams wanting to play with ball in hand in the right areas of the field. Kenilworth opened the scoring through Adam Collingwood from good continuity and several quick rucks. This was converted by John Lowden. Syston replied with a try from their outside centre, M. Wayte-McPherson who had serious gas and made a blistering break. The rain was pouring down now and Syston got the ascendency with Kenilworth giving away too many penalties, mainly for offside. The try was taken by M.Steward, which he duly converted.
The Kenilworth forwards were doing an effective job in the scrum and had the ascendency at times. Pressure into points was the issue and several times Kenilworth just failed to score from good positions in the opposition 22. Syston scored again through their excellent flanker J. Skerritt after a turn-over in the Kenilworth 22. This was unconverted.
The match went into nip and tuck mode and Kenilworth scored next from a turn-over in midfield and a lovely finish from winger Harry Bowser in the corner. The score at half time was now Kenilworth 12 Syston 17.
The second half opened with another score from J. Skerritt after good build up work and poor Kenilworth defence. Kenilworth gave away too many turnovers and penalties through this part of the match and Syston scored more tries through hard graft and efficient finishing. In all from this point Syston defended well, quelled Kenilworth’s attacks and finished their own moves with slick handling. The rain eventually stopped and Kenilworth did manage a really well taken try through Bobby Thompson after extended pressure in the Syston 22, an ensuing yellow card and a driving maul off a lineout. Syston replied with more tries as the game opened up and the final killer blow of an interception by their scrum half A. Riley.
The score at the finish was 17 points to 50. This just about reflected the gap between the two teams. However, it was a much better performance from the Kenilworth squad and hope springs eternal. Man of the match for Kenilworth was Chas Hudson who was outstanding. The next men’s 1st XV match is away at Nuneaton on the 30th November with a 2.15 kick off.
