Kenilworth 10 Silhillians 26 April 5th 2025
A lovely Spring- day and a very hard ground saw the two teams really go at eachother in this bottom of the table clash. The game was preceded by a former players / President’s lunch of which there were sixty- five attendees.
After five minutes of play Silhillians scored through their hooker H. Jones after a clever move at the front of the lineout, and this was unconverted. At twelve minutes the Silhillians strong centre, S. Fraher scored in the opposite corner after good build up work by the forwards, and effective slickness of passing by the backs. This was converted by P.Meigh. This made the score 0 to 12.
Kenilworth were always in this game and showed in both the lineout and scrum they could hold their own, and at times dominate. In the rucks, the ball was being moved by both sides as quickly as possible. The game went into a phase where both teams defended well and made chances but could not score. On thirty- two minutes Kenilworth finally scored a well taken try by Finn Gibson which was converted by Ed Hannam. This was followed by a well struck penalty by Ed Hannam and it made the score 10 to 12 after 40 minutes.
In the second half, the match went into nip and tuck mode for the next ten minutes and Silhillians finally scored from a turn-over in midfield and a finish from full back C. Robertson, which he also converted. Kenilworth spurred on by more ball and continuity created at times, some lovely rugby but just couldn’t score. They also gave away too many penalties and Silhillians kept kicking for territory and creating more pressure.
Silhillians scored again through forward M. Spink who raced down the wing to score after good build up work by the pack. This made the score 10 to 26 which was just about a fair reflection of the game itself. This score just about reflected the gap between the two teams. It was a much better performance from the Kenilworth squad, all of the players showed great character.
This was Kenilworth’s men’s last league game of the season. They will be relegated to level 6 of the national league system. Next season they will play in one of the three feeding leagues, but as yet do not know which one. They also said a farewell to Captain Ed Hannam who has decided to retire after many years of loyal service to the same club. Thankyou Ed. Changes are also happening in the coaching set up with Todd Freemantle and Jon Lowden both moving on to pastures new. They have both given their all. Kenilworth now need to rebuild and regroup for next season.
