Kenilworth Men’s 1st XV 12 Stourbridge Men’s 1st XV 99   January 25th 2025

A double header day at Kenilworth RFC saw the women’s 1st XV kick off at 12.30 and the men kick off at 2.30. This was a fine day for the spirit of rugby but alas not for the results. Both teams lost their respective encounters. The women lost to Barnsley, 7-24 and the men 12 points to 99.

In the men’s game, Stourbridge were a different class of opposition with power, bulk, strength and consummate skills. Their set piece was well drilled and they had ascendency in the scrum from the off. Kenilworth continue to struggle in the scrum which was unfortunately going back even though they tried to lock out and deliver quick ball. Stourbridge ran the ball from all areas of the field and Kenilworth spent large periods of time defending and in scramble mode. By half time Stourbridge had scored ten tries, eight of which were converted by scrum half Michael Heaney. In reply Kenilworth scored a well taken try through Callum Davies to make the score at half time 5 – 66.

In the second half Kenilworth upped their game and defended with more resolve and determination. They scored a lovely try through 2nd row Lewis Kavanagh, converted by Isaac Handley. They deserved to score more points in this half, however Stourbridge were well drilled in defence and their work-rate first class. They were well led by Nick Selway at hooker, they also had an ex Welsh international, Ashley Beck playing in the centre. Such was the gulf.

Outstanding for Kenilworth were back rowers Matt Le-Moign and Adam Collingwood who worked extremely hard. Everyone put a shift in and there were windows of hope and of some really excellent play from this young side. They continue to grow and develop in transition. They are on a tough road and need to stay together as a group.

Next week they are away at Bridgnorth kick off at 2.15.
